BIX (Budapest Internet Exchange) was established in 1995 by the Council of Hungarian Internet Providers (ISZT). The Council’s members are several ISPs so BIX is provider-neutral internet exchange that serves the interest of the whole internet community.

The major purpose of the BIX is to prevent the Hungarian and regional internet traffic between the different internet service providers from loading international connections of the providers. Operating at 3 Data Center locations in Budapest (SZTAKI/Dataplex/Dataneum), which are connected on their 100G backbone using CISCO Nexus 7710 switches. The exchange has 52 connected members (18 international and 34 domestic) with a total of 859 Gbps connected capacity and has 236 Gbps aggregated peak traffic with an annual peering traffic growth rate of 25%.

BIX Budapest provides the perfect peering location for Central European and Balkans based service providers. The newly launched BIX Reseller Program (called BIXViP) provides the opportunity for a remote but of full value BIX membership for further international ISPs or Hungarian service providers operating outside of Budapest.
